"The Maxx Home MiniWoofer uses patented psychoacoustic technology to produce much deeper bass than should be possible from a seven-inch cube and 30-watt amp. The results don't sound half-bad, but it's better suited for consumer-electronics devices like television sets than it is for computer systems.

Waves Audio's Maxx Home MiniWoofer is an innovative add-on bass speaker designed to augment a two-piece speaker system, TV, tabletop radio, or any other device that could use a little extra low end. What differentiates it from other external woofers is Waves' patented MaxxBass® signal-processing technology, which exploits the laws of psychoacoustics to make the MiniWoofer sound like it's producing deeper bass than should be possible from a six-pound, seven-inch cube.

Because the MiniWoofer does not work like a conventional speaker system, we benchmark-tested its frequency response through an indirect procedure that the vendor assured us would reveal what it sounds like, rather than measure the actual sound waves it produces. Our evaluation unit did indeed create the illusion of bass notes several octaves below its 90-Hz physical lower limit. Using its 100-Hz peak level as a reference, its perceived output was down 3 dB at 65 Hz and didn't drop 12 dB until it had reached 40 Hz."

"I also connected the MiniWoofer to the dedicated subwoofer output of an Olevia LT30HV 30-inch LCD TV that also has a built-in amp with side mounted speakers. Although the speakers of the Olevia actually provide good response (for TV speaker systems), adding the MiniWoofer really enhanced the bass response from TV shows and analog DVD and VCR sources. In addition, since the MiniWoofer was connected via the Olevia's dedicated subwoofer output, it was easier to match the volume and intensity level of the MiniWoofer to that of the TV, since changing the sound level of the main speakers also changed the level of the subwoofer (once the initial TV/MiniWoofer levels were matched).

The Maxx home MiniWoofer is very compact, which is perfect for small rooms or use with compact audio setups. Initial setup and operation is easy. In addition, the MiniWoofer uses an auto-power system that operates only when low frequency input signals are detected. In addition, the sound quality is very good, especially when considering the light weight and small size of the miniWoofer."
